It’s Five O’clock Somewhere – Part III

Alcohol Beacause no great story started with a salad by Mirlah @ Best Day Ever

Part III of our cocktail series.  I feel this one may run and run…

Sloe Gin Fizz

Sloe Gin Fizz

First up, a sweet and drinkable cocktail.  A couple of friends make their own sloe gin so happily we always have a supply, but it is easily found in most supermarkets, Gordon’s do a good one.

ice

50ml/1¾fl oz sloe gin

squeeze of  lemon juice

1 tsp sugar syrup (also sold as gomme syrup)

American cream soda to top up

Fill a highball glass with ice.

Pour in the gin, lemon juice and sugar syrup and stir well.

Top up with cream soda.

Garnish with a blackberry and a sprig of mint.

Dirty Martini

Dirty Martini

This is Sophie Dahl’s take on the classic, adding olive brine to vodka and vermouth to dirty up her Martini.

70ml/2fl oz vodka or gin

1 tbsp dry vermouth

2 tbsp olive brine

1 wedge of lemon

1 green olive

Pour the vodka, dry vermouth and olive brine into a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and shake well

Rub the rim of a martini glass with the wedge of lemon.

Strain the contents of the cocktail shaker into the glass and add the olive.

Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned whisky

Now for a whisky based cocktail.  This is a Don Draper classic.

1 thick slice orange peel

1 maraschino cherry, with stem

1 tsp sugar syrup (also sold as gomme syrup)

2-3 drops whisky bitters

ice cubes, as necessary

50ml/2fl oz Scotch or bourbon

twist of lemon peel, to garnish

Take the orange peel and squeeze it with your fingers. Rub the peel around the insides of a whisky tumbler, then place into the glass.

Add the cherry, sugar syrup and bitters, along with three ice cubes.

Add half of the scotch or bourbon and stir for about ten seconds. Add more ice and the remaining scotch or bourbon and stir again for 10-15 seconds.

To serve, garnish with lemon peel.

Cheers.
